Puja at the Dhawan's

Last night we went to Rohit's place for the "engagement" ceremony and puja, or prayer service. They had converted their rooftop into this Indian wonderland with a sheer fabric thatched-style canopy and lounge cushions on slipcovered mattresses. I was joking that if this setup was in the US, it would be some hip new lounge/club.
The night started with decorating the happy couple with jewelry made of flowers. Then there was an elaborate prayer ceremony with a lot of flowers and fire. An Indian band then went through a reeeeeaaaaaaaally long song/chant/prayer that lasted two hours. (The music was beautiful, btw; I just didn't understand how she didn't even have to take a water break during the entire two hours.) Then food!!!
It was an amazing experience---from getting all decked out in a sari to seeing all the Indian women in their resplendent oufits and jewelry.
Next up, the Sangeet tonight which promises to be one kickass party with singing and dancing and mehndi (henna tattoos) for all!
